The Frost preset concentrates on predictable slows and survival for AOE farming. The Fire preset invests in critical-hit interactions and burst windows. Both borrow Arcane mana tools, while a dedicated Arcane Blast build remains a separate choice in the calculator.

Frost — controlled AOE farming

Improved Blizzard, Permafrost and Arctic Reach help manage a packed pull at range. Improved Frost Nova, Ice Block, Cold Snap and Ice Barrier provide recovery tools. This preset deliberately skips Frostbite’s random roots, which can split a moving pack; Arcane Concentration and Meditation support mana between damage windows.

Fire — critical hits and burst

Ignite, Critical Mass and Fire Power strengthen Fire damage, while Improved Scorch supplies its stacking support. Hot Streak links critical hits to a shorter Pyroblast cast and Combustion creates a planned burst window. Arcane Concentration and Meditation help sustain casting when the opening burst is over.

Frost control, Fire burst and Arcane mana pressure

For Frost AOE, start with a manageable pack and an escape route. Gather enemies before slowing them with Blizzard, preserve distance, and keep Frost Nova or Cone of Cold for a gap in control. Ice Barrier protects casts but is not permission to pull enemies that resist control. Mana and reset tools should determine the next pull size.

Fire needs time on a target for its critical-hit and Ignite interactions to pay off. Maintain useful Scorch support and use Combustion when you can keep casting. Hot Streak shortens Pyroblast in this version; it does not automatically turn every familiar proc sequence into an instant Pyroblast.

Arcane builds use Arcane Blast to raise the damage of the next other spell while increasing the cost of additional Blasts. Missile Barrage can provide a short, free Arcane Missiles channel. Decide when to consume the bonus and conserve mana; importing a continuous Arcane Blast rotation from another expansion can empty the mana bar quickly.

Mage talents: WoW Forever vs Classic

Comparison checked against the Classic references in the local beta snapshot, build 1.60.1.70009, dated September 24, 2026. These are talent-data differences, not measured performance rankings; later beta changes can alter them.

  • Arcane gains Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage. The beta Arcane Blast bonus applies to other damage spells and is consumed by one of them, unlike simply copying a Classic Arcane Power/Frostbolt build.
  • Fire gains Hot Streak: qualifying direct critical hits reduce Pyroblast cast time by 25% per stack, up to three stacks. This is a specific cast-time mechanic, not the instant-cast assumption associated with later Fire designs.
  • Frost gains Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost. Winter’s Chill in this data specifically supports Ice Lance and Frostbolt critical chance; AOE control still relies on deliberate slowing and positioning rather than those single-target procs alone.

Source note: Hot Streak

“Hot Streak reduces the cast time of Pyroblast by 25%, stacking up to 3 times.”

Mage build questions

Should an AOE farming Mage take Frostbite?

The supplied farming build skips it. Random roots can leave enemies separated from the moving pack, making Blizzard placement less predictable. Frostbite can be useful for other control plans, but it is not automatically a farming improvement.

Does Hot Streak give an instant Pyroblast in Forever?

The current talent reduces Pyroblast cast time by 25% per stack, up to three stacks. Plan for the remaining cast time; do not assume the instant Pyroblast behavior of another expansion.

When should I stop stacking Arcane Blast?

Before its rising cost prevents the rest of your damage plan. Its stacks improve your next other damage spell and are consumed by that spell. A Missile Barrage opportunity or an upcoming movement phase can be a useful time to spend the bonus.

Is Frost safer than Fire for solo AOE pulls?

The supplied Frost build buys slows, range, Ice Barrier and cooldown resets specifically for that task. Fire offers strong damage windows but does not replicate that control package. Enemy resistances, control immunity and pull size still determine whether a pull is safe.
