Affliction needs targets that live long enough for its effects and channels to work. Destruction favors a more direct Immolate-and-Fire sequence. Demonology remains available for players who want pet-linked defense and scaling; no single preset represents all three jobs.

Affliction — DoTs and drain pressure

Improved Corruption, Malediction and Pandemic support periodic damage. Siphon Life, Soul Siphon and Wrack connect multiple Affliction effects to stronger drains and Shadow damage over time. The Destruction points buy Bane, Ruin and Shadowburn for casting and finishing options when a full DoT sequence is unnecessary.

Destruction — Immolate and Fire burst

Incinerate gains damage against an Immolate target, while Conflagrate and Fire and Brimstone support Fire critical windows. Full Shadow and Flame lets Conflagrate preserve Immolate and Shadowburn refund a shard while linking the two damage schools. Improved Life Tap and defensive Demonology points help sustain the casting plan.

Shard preparation, demon jobs and target lifetime

Prepare soul shards for the abilities you intend to use, rather than discovering an empty supply when the group needs utility. The current Drain Soul description includes shard generation during the channel against suitable enemies with a guaranteed shard when Drain Soul kills one. Life Tap converts health to mana, so coordinate its timing with incoming damage and the healer’s workload.

Choose a demon for its job: a Voidwalker helps with solo threat, a Felhunter brings caster utility, and other demons offer their own damage or support. Demonology can bind more of your defense and damage to a living demon through Soul Link and Demonic Knowledge. Keep the pet alive and able to act; a dead or inactive demon cannot supply those active-pet benefits.

Affliction spreads effects when enemies will survive long enough to take their ticks, then uses drains or Wrack within the remaining window. Destruction keeps Immolate relevant for Incinerate and Conflagrate and uses direct damage when a target must die quickly. Spending multiple casts on DoTs just before a target dies is not sustained damage.

Warlock talents: WoW Forever vs Classic

Comparison checked against the Classic references in the local beta snapshot, build 1.60.1.70009, dated September 24, 2026. These are talent-data differences, not measured performance rankings; later beta changes can alter them.

  • Affliction adds Pandemic, Soul Siphon and Wrack. Wrack increases damage taken from the caster’s other Shadow damage-over-time effects, making the order and overlap of effects more explicit than a Classic DoT checklist.
  • Demonology adds Demonic Pact with a specific sacrifice rule: summoning a different demon no longer cancels Demonic Sacrifice, but resummoning the sacrificed demon still does. This is not the raid spell-power buff from a later expansion.
  • Destruction adds Incinerate and Shadow and Flame. At full rank, Shadow and Flame prevents Conflagrate from consuming Immolate and instantly refunds Shadowburn’s shard, changing the Classic resource and refresh decisions around those spells.

Source note: Demonic Pact

“Your Demonic Sacrifice effect is no longer cancelled by summoning a different Demon pet.”

Warlock build questions

Should I use DoTs on every enemy even when they die quickly?

No. Apply them when enough duration remains to recover the setup time. Affliction benefits from overlapping effects on durable targets; direct damage or a finishing spell can be more useful when only a few seconds remain.

Does Conflagrate consume Immolate in this build?

The supplied Destruction build takes full Shadow and Flame, which gives Conflagrate a 100% chance not to consume Immolate. Without those ranks, do not assume the same behavior.

Which demon can I summon after Demonic Sacrifice with Demonic Pact?

A different demon can coexist with the sacrifice effect under the current Demonic Pact talent. Resummoning the same demon you sacrificed still cancels that effect. Choose the sacrifice and active pet as a pair.

Do I have to land the killing blow to get a Drain Soul shard?

Not for every shard: suitable enemies damaged by Drain Soul have a chance to grant one during the channel. The current tooltip guarantees a shard when Drain Soul kills a non-trivial target. That is a damage-or-kill rule, so do not assume every death during your channel guarantees one.
