The Combat preset favors repeatable damage with fewer positional demands. The Backstab preset commits to Subtlety’s new finisher and builder interactions. Neither is a weapon-independent best Rogue build: daggers, positioning and encounter length change the choice.

Combat — sustained weapon DPS

Improved Sinister Strike lowers builder cost, Precision and Dual Wield Specialization support reliable weapon damage, and Blade Flurry plus Adrenaline Rush create planned burst windows. Assassination contributes Malice, Lethality, Improved Slice and Dice and Relentless Strikes so sustained attacks and finishing moves support one another.

Subtlety — Backstab and bleed pressure

Puncturing Wounds improves Backstab criticals and extra combo-point chances. Cutthroat boosts Backstab and allows unstealthed Ambush; Thousand Cuts turns Rupture ticks into cheaper Backstab or Hemorrhage casts. Premeditation, Preparation and Hemorrhage add setup and utility, while Relentless Strikes helps recover energy after finishers.

Energy, combo points and access to the target’s back

Energy limits how quickly you can build, while combo points determine the strength or duration of finishing moves. Pool enough energy for the next important sequence, but avoid sitting at the energy cap. Spend combo points before another builder would waste them, and maintain Slice and Dice when enough sustained melee time remains to benefit.

Backstab needs the right weapon and positioning. Plan around moments when the target turns or you must move; a high theoretical critical chance cannot help when you cannot use the ability. The Subtlety preset keeps Rupture relevant because Thousand Cuts rewards its ticks with cheaper builders, rather than treating every finisher as immediate burst.

Combat emphasizes repeatable weapon attacks and cooldown timing. Assassination develops poison pressure, Mutilate and Venom. Subtlety emphasizes setup, stealth tools and new Backstab/Hemorrhage interactions. A poison build should be evaluated separately from a bleed-and-positioning build, even when both use daggers.

Rogue talents: WoW Forever vs Classic

Comparison checked against the Classic references in the local beta snapshot, build 1.60.1.70009, dated September 24, 2026. These are talent-data differences, not measured performance rankings; later beta changes can alter them.

  • Assassination gains Mutilate and Venom. Venom is a combo-point finisher that improves poison damage and application chance; it should not be confused with a similarly named finisher from another expansion.
  • Combat moves the Backstab investment into Puncturing Wounds, which also affects Mutilate and adds a chance for Backstab to generate an extra combo point. Familiar Classic weapon builds need their point locations rechecked.
  • Subtlety gains Cutthroat and Thousand Cuts. Unstealthed Ambush access and Rupture-driven energy discounts give the tree a sustained combat plan beyond the opener-and-reset role many players associate with Classic.

Source note: Relentless Strikes

“Your finishing moves have a 20% chance per Combo Point to restore 25 Energy.”

Rogue build questions

Is Backstab worth taking if I cannot stay behind the boss?

Its value drops when positioning prevents casts. Use the sustained Combat preset for more predictable access, or plan alternative builders during forced movement; do not judge a Backstab loadout solely by its tooltip damage.

Should I use Rupture with Thousand Cuts or only direct-damage finishers?

Rupture is part of the Thousand Cuts resource loop: its ticks reduce the cost of your next Backstab or Hemorrhage, stacking up to five times. It needs time to tick, so a target about to die may still favor immediate damage.

Does Venom replace my poison with an instant damage finisher?

The current Venom tooltip describes increased poison damage and application chance based on combo points. Plan around keeping poison pressure active; do not import an Envenom rotation from a different expansion.

When should I activate Adrenaline Rush?

Use it when you can stay on the target and spend the extra energy. Avoid triggering it just before forced movement or while already energy-capped; align it with useful melee uptime and Blade Flurry when appropriate targets are available.
