The Holy preset is a group-healing starting point; the Shadow preset is a dedicated damage loadout. Discipline remains a distinct shield-and-Penance option in the tree, rather than a substitute name for either preset.

Holy — responsive group healer

Prayer of Mending, Binding Heal and Spirit of Redemption provide different responses to group pressure. Litany of Light rewards useful changes between healing spells, while Spiritual Healing improves throughput. The Discipline investment buys Meditation, Mental Agility and Inner Focus to support mana management during sustained healing.

Shadow — damage over time and Mind Flay

Shadowform, Darkness and Shadow Weaving form the damage core. Improved Shadow Word: Pain, Mind Flay and Devouring Contagion support a sustained spell sequence, with Spirit Tap helping between kills. Discipline contributes Meditation and mana efficiency; this is not a healing allocation while Shadowform is active.

Choosing the next heal or the next Shadow cast

For healing, match the spell to the damage pattern: Renew needs time to work, a direct heal answers an immediate deficit, Binding Heal is useful when both you and another player are injured, and Prayer of Mending needs triggering events. Plan mana over the whole pull. Litany of Light rewards changing healing spells, but spending a global cooldown on unnecessary overhealing is not an efficiency gain.

Discipline invests in Power Word: Shield, Soul Warding, Penance and Divine Aegis. Holy prioritizes direct and group recovery through Prayer of Mending and its healing modifiers. Choose shields for anticipated damage and healing for health already missing; group composition and incoming damage determine which package is useful.

Shadow maintains damage-over-time effects on enemies that will survive their duration, then fits Mind Blast and Mind Flay into available casting windows. Devouring Contagion can carry remaining Devouring Plague duration after a kill. Leaving Shadowform to rescue someone is a role tradeoff: the form itself prevents healing spells.

Priest talents: WoW Forever vs Classic

Comparison checked against the Classic references in the local beta snapshot, build 1.60.1.70009, dated September 24, 2026. These are talent-data differences, not measured performance rankings; later beta changes can alter them.

  • Discipline adds Penance, Soul Warding and Divine Aegis. This creates more explicit shield and critical-heal interactions than the Classic tree, so a Classic Power Infusion allocation misses several new tools.
  • Holy adds Binding Heal, Litany of Light and Prayer of Mending. The current Prayer of Mending can trigger from damage or non-periodic healing, making its behavior broader than a damage-only assumption.
  • Shadow gains Devouring Contagion and revises Shadowform. The local tooltip includes reduced Shadow mana costs and a larger critical-damage bonus; use the current values in the calculator rather than Classic multipliers.

Source note: Litany of Light

“When you cast a healing spell, gain Mana equal to 10% of the base cost of the spell if your previous heal was a different spell.”

Priest build questions

Can I cast emergency healing spells without leaving Shadowform?

No. The current Shadowform tooltip prevents healing spells while the form is active. Leave the form before healing and account for the lost damage time and resource cost when deciding whether you should cover an emergency.

Does Prayer of Mending only jump after damage?

In this beta, its trigger also includes non-periodic healing. Read the current spellbook description when coordinating it with another healer instead of assuming only enemy damage can trigger it.

Should I alternate heals just to trigger Litany of Light?

Only when both heals serve a real need. Litany of Light refunds mana when the previous healing spell was different, but unnecessary overhealing still spends mana and time. Let target health and the damage pattern choose the spell first.

Should I choose Discipline shields or Holy for dungeon healing?

Holy offers the supplied Prayer of Mending and Binding Heal loadout for recovering group health. Discipline offers Penance and shield-focused talents for a different damage pattern. Choose by the group’s needs and your mana experience, rather than treating one as a universal winner.
